Family Newsletter 6/3

Posted Date: 6/02/24 (6:30 PM)

Good evening, families,

It's hard to believe, but this week marks the end of the NEHS journey for our seniors.  Friday is their last day, and Saturday brings graduation!  Please see below for updates and information regarding our various ceremonies and activities, and continue to be on the lookout for any additional communications via email, our website, and social media.  Congratulations in advance to all of our graduates and their families!

For our 9th-11th grade students, there are only ten days left in this school year.  If there are questions or concerns regarding classes, please be reaching out to teachers, a counselor, case manager, or your grade-level administrator.  We are here to help students in finishing strong at the end of the school year.  For those interested, please also consider the many summer program options available to students this summer!

Take care!

GO HIGHLANDERS!

NEHS HIGHLANDER STUDENT NEWS

Day of Caring

This Wednesday, our 9th grade students will be participating in a Day of Caring.  This is an opportunity for them to engage in volunteer activities within our community.  Many of our 9th grade students will be helping nearby elementary schools during their Field Day activities, and some will be staying to help beautify the NEHS campus ahead of graduation.  Students will be engaged in these activities during periods 1-3.  Thanks to our 9th grade team for organizing this event!

News from the Library

Please work with your student to ensure all library books are found and returned to our library.  Notices will soon be going out to students and families.  If students are still using materials they may remain checked out.  However, students should return all books from previous trimesters and anything no longer being used this trimester.  If there are any questions, please reach out:

Graduation Time!

Below is a recap of the dates and times seniors and their families/guests need to be aware of in preparation for our graduation ceremony.

NEHS Graduation for the Class of 2024

  • Saturday, June 8th, at 2:00 pm at Swede Johnson Stadium
  • Each graduate will be able to invite up to six guests.  Additional ticket requests have been processed and granted at this time, and students should go to Jessica in the front office to pick up the additional tickets.  The entire graduation ceremony will be live-streamed for those unable to attend (the link will be available on the NEHS website).
  • Guests will be able to access the stadium starting at 1:00 pm the day of the ceremony, and should plan to exit the stadium at the conclusion of the ceremony.
  • As always, parking is limited.  Please consider carpooling to the event.

All graduates who plan to walk in the graduation ceremony must attend a rehearsal event the morning of June 8th, at 9:00 am.  Graduates will meet in the NEHS main gym to begin rehearsal, no need for regalia at that time.  Graduates should plan on reporting back to the NEHS gym to prepare for the ceremony at 1:00 pm that afternoon, with their caps and gowns.

Graduates will walk across the stage to receive their diploma covers (diplomas are mailed after grades are finalized) and have the opportunity for a professional photo which will be available for purchase from LifeTouch Photography.

IB Graduation Congratulations!
It's that time of the year, where many ceremonies are happening to celebrate our students. We just wanted to take a few minutes to give a shoutout to all of our staff who are involved with the IB program. The IB graduation ceremony was fantastic, and there is nothing better than seeing our families be so proud of their students accomplishments.

Massive kudos to you all, especially Kara and Kendall for all of their hard work all year long.

Seal of Biliteracy Recipients & Candidates

The ability to understand, read, write, and speak multiple languages opens many doors and provides countless opportunities for our students so that they can shine, be respected for their diversity, and become successful in a labor market that is increasingly competitive and globalized. The State of Oregon, along with 38 other states, has established the Seal of Biliteracy to recognize high school graduates who have attained a working level of proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking in one or more World Languages in addition to English. The Seal of Biliteracy is awarded by the Superintendent of Public Instruction for the State of Oregon. We are honored to recognize the following students for this accomplishment.

4J COMMUNITY NEWS
Lane County health officials say a recent rise in cases of pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, indicate the respiratory tract infection is spreading in our community. We are asking our families to be vigilant to prevent further spread of the infection in our school and larger community. Families are encouraged to stay up-to-date with their pertussis vaccinations and keep children home from school if they show symptoms of pertussis.

An FAQ with more information is available on the 4J website both in English and in Spanish. If you have further questions, please call your medical provider or Lane County Public Health, 541-682-4041.
