CTE Programs at NEHS
What is CTE?
Career and technical education—also known as CTE—describes high school courses and pathways that prepare students for work. Engaging, hands-on CTE learning helps prepare students for college or the job skills of the future.
These are not the vocational programs of previous generations. Today’s CTE courses are more academically rigorous and focus on preparing students for careers in the modern economy, most of which are typically associated with associate or bachelor’s degrees or beyond.
4J’s CTE programs bridge student strengths, passions and interests with the current skills and knowledge necessary to enter high-wage/high-demand careers reflective of the global marketplace, such as computer science, health occupations, engineering, and more.
The mission for career and technical education is to ensure that all students successfully and creativity engage with technologies, communities, environments and workplaces. Programs provide opportunities for students to develop a set of skills that includes collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, workplace skills and industry-specific expectations. Students develop these authentic skills through academic and hands-on learning opportunities and simulations.
Why CTE?
4J’s cutting-edge, rigorous and relevant career and technical education prepares youth for high-wage, high-skill, high-demand careers in established and emerging industries. These programs bring theory to practice, connecting classroom instruction to the world of work and future career opportunities.
Students who take CTE classes:
- Develop technical skills and understand safety protocols while working with commercial-grade equipment and tools
- Apply language arts, math and science skills to industry-related programs
- Engage with local and regional industry leaders and have opportunities for internships, job shadows and entry-level employment
- Develop a post-high school plan that may include direct entry into the workforce, college admission or a convergence of the two paths
- Build confidence and skills to compete for high-skill, high-wage, high-demand occupations
