Principal Newsletter 1/24/2021

NEHS Principal Update

Principal’s Note

It’s hard to believe, but the mid-point of trimester two is already upon us!  This week’s newsletter contains many updates for parents and students.  Please be aware that this week is midterm grading, which means we have a four-day week and no school on Friday.  In addition, there are updates regarding athletics, grading, senior deadlines, and more.

Be well!

Schedule for this Week

Given the mid-term grading day this Friday, January 29th, our week will have four school days and no Flex Wednesday.  Below is the schedule for the week.  For a complete bell schedule and calendar, please see our website at: https://nehs.4j.lane.edu/daily-schedule/
Monday: ‘A’ day (P1, P2, P3), live instruction begins at 8:30 am
Tuesday: ‘B’ day (P4, P5, P0), live instruction begins at 8:30 am
Wednesday: ‘A’ day (P1, P2, P3), live instruction begins at 8:30 am
Thursday: ‘B’ day (P4, P5, P0), live instruction begins at 8:30 am
Friday: NO SCHOOL

Grading Reminders

The second trimester has moved quickly, and midterm grading is here.  Given that we are still operating in distance learning, grading structures will remain the same as last trimester.  Here are some highlights:

  • There will be no grade of ‘F’ issued this trimester.  Instead, students who do not earn a passing grade for a class will not be awarded credit and they will receive a grade of NP (No Pass).  While neither mark earns credit in a class, the use of NP (No Pass) does not have an impact on a student’s GPA (unlike the F).  Midterm grades will also use the NP instead of the ‘F’ when reporting progress.
  • Students/families will have up until the last day of the trimester (March 18th) to opt to receive a grade of Pass (P) in any course, rather than a letter grade, but may make the decision at any time.  This decision must be communicated with the course instructor.  Students and families should consider any impact this may have on post-secondary plans and are encouraged to reach out to the student’s counselor if there are questions.

If you have questions, please reach out to your student’s teacher(s), counselor, or grade-level administrator.

Making Work Count!

Attention Students! If you currently have a job or have had one at any point during high school, you are able to receive .5 credit for every 135 hours you have worked. If you have work credit please submit your pay stubs to your counselor or Catherine Moran as soon as possible. We would like to get these credits on your transcript to ensure they go towards your graduation requirements and sports eligibility if needed! Contact your counselor if you have any questions.
