In the Academy of Arts, students learn through a seamless combination of arts and academics. Art and core content standards support and compliment each other to create powerful and engaging learning experiences for our students. Our program features challenging collage-preparatory courses that put students at the center of learning, as well as services and support classes designed to match individual student needs. We are committed to providing opportunities for all students to think creatively and independently, to question, and to be active participants in their education and their community.
Staff at the AoA have created a unique program of challenging art projects that include literary analysis, graphic art, performing arts, digital storytelling and historical inquiry.
Students write, read, and question the meaning of art and the significance of art in our lives. Students also learn to use state-of-the-art technology that allows them to create art digitally, or to easily showcase the traditional art they create.
The DECO Program
Students in the AoA learn through the DECO process: Discover, Explore, Create and Own. This acronym is the centerpiece for our inquiry-based instruction and is a cycle of investigation, exhibition, critique, revision and further curiosity.
The arts are an important part of any culture around the world, and as such, our teachers use artistic experiences as tools for teaching and the assessment of learning whenever possible. Our two high-end computer labs offer software specifically for layout, design, and video editing, and we also have a recording studio. Our teachers collaborate to develop integrated art projects and field trips to engage students in course content.
